2 Tips For Getting Rid Of The Ants Invading Your Kitchen By Using Their Habits Against Them

About Me
Keeping My House Cleaner

After experiencing a wretched spider infestation, my pest control professional told me something that I would never forget. In the nicest possible way, she told me that my house was too messy to keep bugs out in the first place. She explained that when people leave food around, it attracts small pests like ants and cockroaches, which then attract larger predators like spiders and mice. I decided to clean up my place so that I wouldn't have to worry about creepy crawlies calling my place home. On my blog, you will learn more about pest control and the importance of house cleaning, so that you don't make the same mistake I did.

2 Tips For Getting Rid Of The Ants Invading Your Kitchen By Using Their Habits Against Them

When you see ants crawling around your kitchen and invading your cabinets, your first thought may be to get out the ant spray and start dousing them with poison. However, instead of killing off only a small percentage of the colony, use the tips below to get rid of them by using their own habits against them.

1.  Observe and Use the Worker Ants to Your Advantage

When you see ants walking along your floors and counters, these are the worker ants responsible for finding and bringing food back to the colony. If you observe them for a day or two, you will notice that they follow the same paths every time because they are following the scent trails left behind to indicate where the food is located.

You can use this in a couple of ways, with the first being that it gives you an idea as to where to place poisonous ant bait. Mixing powdered sugar with equal parts boric acid will attract the ants, who will then take the poisoned sugar back to the colony.

By setting up the bait and having them deliver it, you have a greater chance of killing more ants than you see. Just make sure you place the bait out of reach of your pets and children.

2.  Spray the Ants' Scent Trails with Vinegar and Water

After a few days of allowing the ants to take the bait and poison their own colony, the next thing you can do to use what you have observed to get rid of the insects is to eliminate their scent trails. Once you have an idea of where the trails are located, you can erase them with vinegar and water.

Remove the ant bait to keep from attracting the ants, and clean your kitchen thoroughly to make sure there are no remaining crumbs or drops of water. Then, fill a bucket with warm water and a cup of white distilled vinegar and wipe down the areas where you have seen the ants crawling around.

While the above tips can help you get rid of a small number of ants, you may not be able to get rid of them all if you have a full-blown infestation. Contact an ant control service company to have them determine the extent of your ant problem and discuss with you methods of getting rid of the invaders once and for all.
